A proper, healthy lifestyle should always have a good balance between work, rest, and play. A regular workout routine needs to include rest days, for your muscles to repair themselves, creating stronger muscles over time. Getting the most out of your 12RND Fitness program means taking time to rest too!

What are rest days?

Rest days should be a day off from any heavy physical activity, giving your muscles a chance to rest and repair themselves. How often you take a rest day will depend on your training program, but you should plan on at least one day a week, more if you are new to training. Two days on, one day off is a good rule of thumb when you’re starting out. It’s important to listen to your body, and figure out the schedule that is working best for you and your fitness level.

How much do I need to “rest”?

While everyone is different, you should try to avoid any taxing physical activity on your rest days. Taking a walk or doing some light yoga can be acceptable activities, providing you don’t overdo it. Even better, take the opportunity to give yourself a mental break on your rest days, and incorporate some play into your schedule. Read a book, take the dog to the park, or do a puzzle with your spouse. Find something else that you love to do besides physical activity. It’s important to give your mind and your spirit a workout too to create a happy life balance!

Why do I need a rest day?

Recovery is an essential aspect of any training program. When you work out, you create tiny tears in your muscles. Resting allows proteins and amino acids the time to repair your tissues and muscles, and restore your energy for the next workout. Your body will grow stronger through this process, so you never need to feel guilty about taking a rest day!

Remember, it’s all about balance. Getting the most from your training program also requires rest time, play time, and mental health time, along with proper sleep and diet. Since everyone’s body type and fitness level are different, learning to listen to what your body is telling you can help you plan your rest days accordingly. If you’re feeling sore, achy, or overtired, take the hint and take a rest!
